Farzi Review – The anti-hero of the eight-episode show conceived, produced, directed and co-written by Raj & DK, represents that section of the Indian population crushed under the weight of loans and repayments.

Money makes the world go round. In Farzi, set in post-demonetization India, a spiral is unleashed that pits the protagonist, an exceptionally skilled but feisty artist, against the law and an underworld boss. He prints his own cash, mocking a system at the mercy of the rich and powerful. The ensuing battle of attrition forms the backbone of a solid, elaborate,

Superbly executed series.

The anti-hero of the eight-part show conceived, produced, directed and co-written by Raj & DK represents that segment of the Indian population crushed under the weight of loans and payments. It resorts to crime as an act of rebellion.

With a screenplay by director duo with Sita R. Menon and Suman Kumar, each episode is around an hour. However, thanks to a gripping storyline, the smoothly paced series maintains its momentum throughout its individual chapters and eight parts. Streaming on Amazon Prime Video, Farzi isn’t the kind of show that mixes action sequences and shootouts simply for mere visceral effect. It includes an examination of the nature of need and the dynamics of greed in the narrative and places it on a constantly shifting canvas of emotions and relationships.

A bromance involving two orphans who grew up together, a drama about a grandfather-grandson relationship, the story of a crumbling marriage, the story of a cop’s search for redemption, and a portrait of a busy young professional who finds it. setting that you do not feel and immediately realize its value: Farzi merges several real and believable threads into a narrative that conveys emotions and raises questions.

Shahid Kapoor, in his streaming debut, plays Sunny, a talented street artist who discovers Van Gogh knockoffs and creates five-minute portraits for a pittance. Think you deserve better.

He also works on the staff of his grandfather’s anti-establishment magazine, Kranti. The older man, played wonderfully well by Amol Palekar, has had run-ins with the country’s rulers due to his outspoken views. The seasoned rebel is in stark contrast to the wayward nephew. The latter has no scruples. Their dissent is both illegal and amoral. Sunny’s impatience and defiance have put him in the crosshairs of an anti-counterfeiting unit led by a tough but troublesome cop, a crime network led by a ruthless gangster who smuggles counterfeit Indian currency into the country, and a brilliant young security expert determined to contribute his handout to the nation’s war on financial terrorism.

It is necessity that drives Sunny to a life of crime. The publishing business has run up huge debts and is closing down. The hero realizes that waiting for the money to come is not an option. So with the help of his childhood friend Firoz (Bhuvan Arora), he generates his fake money and saves the magazine.

That daring crime, a rebellion against a system that helps the rich get rich and pushes the poor deeper into poverty, whets Sunny’s appetite. She seeks help from her grandfather’s manager, paternal Yasir (Chittaranjan Giri), as her counterfeiting business grows.

What begins as a plan to save a printing press soon turns into a full-fledged operation fueled by greed and adventure. A petty agent gets sucked into a cross-border counterfeit currency smuggling ring that escapes from the safety of an unidentified country in the Middle East. As the stakes rise and Sunny and Firoz start to raise the money, the risks multiply.

A government undercover operation in Kathmandu to catch counterfeiter Mansoor Dalal (Kay Kay Menon) goes awry and the target escapes. The police officer leading the charge, Michael Vednayagam (Vijay Sethupathi, in his Hindi debut and first foray into the streaming space) is determined to weather the setback. His inner demons threaten to get in the way, but he keeps going. Michael forces a cynical and corrupt minister (Zakir Hussain) to set up a new anti-counterfeiting task force under his supervision.

He assembles his team from Kathmandu, soon joined by Megha Vyas (Raashii Khanna), a Reserve Bank of India recruit who has devised a cash counting chip that can detect counterfeit banknotes. Mansoor Dalal’s organized crime world and Sunny’s local business intersect. She takes the showdown between outlaws and bloodhounds to another level. Some compare Mansoor to a venomous snake. It is equally an aggressive mongoose. Sunny now has her hands full.

You make a sure-fire, undetectable “supernote.” But Sunny isn’t a super criminal and Michael isn’t a super cop. Both are men with palpable flaws facing emotional challenges. The criminal and the cop fight to hold on to the people closest to them.

Childhood friend Firoz, a grandfather she admires, and main collaborator Yasir are key people in Sunny’s life. A mother who died when he was a child reappears as he and his grandfather reminisce about the heavenly varan bhaat she used to cook. The emptiness in Sunny’s life. Michael, alcoholic and tough as nails, makes awkward efforts to make up for lost ground with his estranged wife (Regina Cassandra) and seven-year-old son. Michael wants to be an ordinary family man but he is not Srikant Tiwari. His backstory, only revealed halfway through the series, bears scars that are hard to erase.

Farzi is packed with impressive performances. The presence of Vijay Sethupathi gives a lot of weight to the series and raises the bar. The other actors match the effortless naturalness that Sethupathi brings to the table. The only one who is allowed to be a little flamboyant is Kay Kay Menon, who comes in with a balanced and impactful act.

Shahid Kapoor sinks his teeth into the meaty central role and delivers a performance that is notable for its sustained restraint. Aside from Amol Palekar who is splendid as the embodiment of a moral compass that the protagonist has to contend with when breaking the law, Raashii Khanna, Chittaranjan Giri and Bhuvan Arora are characters we would definitely like to see more of.

The difference between a masterpiece and a disaster is one wrong shot, Sunny’s grandfather tells her. Farzi tests the aphorism on himself and lives to tell it with most of his guidelines firmly in place, which is no feat at all.
