James Cameron’s long-awaited sequel to Avatar is a three-hour slog with characters seemingly designed by a sixth former junkie. 

Amazing! Fascinating! Thrilling! Immersive! Neither of these words could sensibly apply to the three and a quarter hour Wet Smurfahontas stodgeathon that is Avatar: The Way of Water. A heavy, humorless, technology-driven film, this long-awaited (or dreaded?) sequel to one of the highest-grossing films of all time builds on its predecessor’s potent flaws and delivers a dirge that puts Test Your Patience which is longer, uglier, and (surprisingly) even more goofy than its predecessor’s script, mixing corny characterization with sub-Roger Dean 1970s album cover designs and incredibly underwhelming action sequences. In water.

We pick up several years after the totally forgettable shenanigans of 2009’s Avatar. In the distant world of Pandora, Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) has gone native and is starting a family with Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) after shedding his human skin to inhabit his alien avatar (see previous film). When Earth’s “sky people” come seeking combat, among other things, the forest-friendly Sullies are forced to flee to distant archipelagos where the water tribes dwell. Here, they must abandon their tree-hugging lifestyle and learn the ways of the people of the reef, who have thicker tails and are a bit more turquoise. Indeed.

The Metkayina tribe is led by Tonowari (Cliff Curtis) and his mate, Ronal (Kate Winslet), whose children bear no relation to the Sully brood, setting the stage for much teen movie-style infighting, followed by the inevitable and boring bromance ties. Along the way, our blue heroes will learn to drive amphibious hovercraft (imagine How to Train Your Dragon as told by the authors of Star Trek and Stingray), speak the language of the seas in all their beautiful wetness, and befriend a whale damaged-like creature (think Free Willy into Space) who will become a key player in the film’s handling of emotional baggage. Underneath is the same bland anti-imperial/anti-colonial/eco-friendly metaphor. 

There are moments that are supposed to be thrilling. These are easy to spot because the on-screen characters yell “Woohoo!” the same way young Anakin yelled “Yippee!” in Star Wars: Episode 1 – The Phantom Menace. Sadly, the comparisons to Lucas’ ill-fated space opera prequels don’t end there. Like Jar Jar Binks, the denizens of Pandora look like they were engineered by a drunk sixth grader while listening to Tales From Topographic Oceans, a wide-eyed Middle-earth marvel steeped in Fern Gully-esque fairytale heroism. There’s also a feral human child (talks normally, but occasionally growls in annoyance) who James Cameron presumably imagines to be a thematic descendant of Rudyard Kipling’s Mowgli, but whose annoying presence just reminded me how much he preferred the lush worlds of The Jungle by Jon Favreau. . Book and Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle by Andy Serkis.

Naturally, the joyful movement of the water (“Woohoo!”) cannot last, and the Sky People come calling, leading to a hyperbolic action showdown that crashes the third act of Aliens (sprog hunting against the time through exploding or collapsing metal structures) with the first act of The Poseidon Adventure (water world turned upside down) and the second half of Titanic (breath holding and personal conflict resolution combined!).

As for 3D, a dying format that has risen and fallen like the tide countless times throughout the history of cinema, all it immerses us in is the stark reality of China’s theatrical market, where spectacular stereoscopy still dominates. Let’s face it, with very few notable exceptions (Creature From the Black Lagoon in the 1950s,

Flesh for Frankenstein in the 1970s, Gravity in the 21st century), 3D has done little to “improve” the viewing experience of any game. . But when the financial stakes are so high (The Way of Water reportedly needs an estimated $2bn, £1.6bn, to wash its face), Cameron simply can’t afford to walk away from a stunt for the hell of it. gong banger, bishop. and accountant.

Underneath it all is the same anti-imperial/anti-colonial/eco-friendly metaphor that gave the first Avatar the illusion of seriousness, though it’s hard not to notice how much Cameron likes the human hardware sequences, which they have a gritty physicality that contrasts sharply with the floating computer game imagery of the rest of the film. It remains to be seen whether things will improve over the course of subsequent films (two more sequels are already in the works). With this evidence, I doubt it.
