After getting his biggest success, Nandamuri Kalyan Ram is back with another concept oriented film titled Friends. As Kalyan Ram plays a triple role, there is quite a buzz around the film. Directed by newcomer Rajendra Reddy and produced by Mythri Movie Makers, the film was released on screens today. So let’s see how it is.

History: 

Siddharth (Kalyan Ram), who lives in Hyderabad, is fascinated by the concept of doppelganger (lookalike). He continues to search for his he doppelgangers and to his surprise he finds not one but two (Manjunath Hegde and Michael). Soon the three meet and Siddharth takes the help of the other two to make Ishika (Ashika Ranganath) fall in love with him.

When all goes well, Siddharth and Manjunath get to know the unknown side of Michael which surprises them. Who is this Miguel? What’s your past? What did Siddharth and Manjunath do after hearing about Michael? The film has the answers. Other points: 

From start to finish is the entire Kalyan Ram program. Kalyan Ram has most of the time on the screen, as it is seen almost in every box of the film. Playing a triple role is not easy but Kalyan Ram has done the job effortlessly. It is important for an actor to show variation while playing such roles, and Kalyan Ram’s act was nothing short of brilliant.

Friends is undoubtedly one of the best performances of Kalyan Ram. The actor is ruthless like Michael, innocent like Manjunath and shows subtlety like Siddharth. The film has some interesting moments and the proceedings are a bit hectic in the second half. A tense atmosphere is created between the antagonist and the protagonist’s family. The scenes that come in this regard are well intertwined and quite attractive.

Enno Ratrulosthayi’s song placement is good and provides much needed relief in this seriously driven action drama. Ashika Ranganath makes a decent Tollywood debut. She was beautiful and performed well in her limited role. Brahmaji skillfully supported Kalyan Ram and got some laughs. Jaya Prakash is decent. Less points: 

The concept of Doppelganger himself is very interesting, but the creators have not found an attractive script that could have created more dramas in the central point of the film to collect the procedures. But this did not happen to friends. There are interesting moments here and there but again they are short lived. The narration of the film is in the middle and the whole first half is boring with a slow pace.

The concept is introduced correctly, but then the graph suddenly drops, recovering only in the second half. Nothing exciting happens in the first hour and the intermission blast is weak. There are no twists and the film becomes predictable after a certain amount of time. The way the NIA is shown is pretty bad and many times they still fail to catch a terrible criminal. This type of film needs sharp editing and an effective soundtrack, but unfortunately these two aspects were not in line with the expectations.

Technical aspects: 

It’s amazing to see this kind of inferior work by Ghibran. More attention should have been paid to the background score to improve the impact. Soundar Rajan’s cinematography is good and so are the production values. The manufacturers have not compromised on quality.

The editing could have been much better and the entire first half needed some major corrections. As for the new director, Rajendra Reddy, he has done a good job with the film. He managed to come up with a fascinating concept and the casting of him was also perfect. But the problems in writing have played a spoilsport. What otherwise could have been a great thriller ended up being a good movie due to a bad script. Verdict: 

Overall, Friends works to some extent and benefits greatly from Kalyan Ram’s amazing performance. Ashika, Brahmaji and others justified their roles. The film actually had more scope, but it wasn’t utilized to its fullest extent. The movie has a decent second half and a poor first half. Therefore, Amigos ends up being a good watch this weekend.
